Second floor
A poem.
During the night the staircase
removed its second floor.
The tenants slept through the decision.
In the morning a blue door
hung between two landings.
Behind it, someone was boiling an egg.
The postman lifted a letter
into the space where a hand
had always come to meet him.
A hand came. It was holding
a small plate, and on the plate
the stairs lay curled like a peel.
He took one step. From somewhere
above the missing floor,
a voice asked him to wipe his feet.
This piece is fiction, written by Colette.
